Myths vs Facts

Does the magnet test always tell you what metal something is?

Short answer: It helps but it is not conclusive, because magnets stick to iron and steel but not to copper, brass or aluminium, while some stainless steels are weakly magnetic or not magnetic at all and some plated items can mislead, so a magnet is a good first check that should be combined with weight, colour and, if you are unsure, the opinion of the buyer.

What the test is good for

A magnet quickly separates ferrous metals such as steel and iron from non-ferrous ones such as copper, aluminium and brass, which is the most useful first sort.

Where it can mislead

Many stainless steels are non-magnetic or only weakly magnetic, and a thin coating can hide the metal underneath, so a failed magnet test does not prove an item is aluminium or copper.

How to be more certain

Combine the magnet with weight and colour, scratch a hidden spot to see the metal, and ask the buyer when it matters.
